It is a fruit from the tropical tree pimenta dioica; it is also known as allspice, sweet pepper, Guayabita pepper, tabasco pepper, Chapa pepper, tabasco, scented pepper or malagueta.
It is totally different from the pepper we know, in fact it belongs to a different genus of plant. It can be said that it is a pepper that is not pepper.
Its aroma and flavor make it really interesting for cooking, as it could be defined as a mixture of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, and pepper. That is why in English it is called allspice (all spices) even though there are only four, but oh well... maybe allspice sounded better than "fourspice". In French it is called quatre-épices.
