Santa Ema Winery presents the Santa Ema Select Terroir Reserva Merlot Red Wine from the Valle Central Designation of Origin (Chile), made from 100% Merlot grape varieties.

Awards:

  • James Suckling 90 points Harvest 2021

The Santa Ema Select Terroir Reserva Merlot Red Wine comes from the Valle Central, one of the most important wine regions in Chile. This valley stretches between the two mountain ranges, the Andes and the Coast, which exert a significant influence on the characteristics of the grapes. The temperate Mediterranean climate of the Valle Central, with cold winters and dry, hot summers, is ideal for the cultivation of high-quality vines.

The 2022 harvest season was marked by a relatively dry winter, followed by a cold spring. During the summer, temperatures remained temperate at first, but turned hot towards the end, allowing the grapes to ripen properly, though with a slight delay. This situation even advanced the harvest of white grapes. The fall remained dry and warm, which helped to even out the ripening of the red vines, ending the harvest on the usual dates. Yields were slightly lower than expected, but the result was good quality wines, aromatic, balanced, and with adequate acidity.

The grapes of the Santa Ema Select Terroir Reserva Merlot Red Wine were crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks for a period of 7 days at 28°C, followed by a post-fermentative maceration of 3 days. After malolactic fermentation, a portion of the wine aged in oak barrels for a period of 4 to 6 months, adding complexity to the final blend.

40% of the blend of this wine was aged in oak barrels for a period of 4 to 6 months, contributing notes of wood that enrich its aromatic and gustatory profile.
