Carrasqueña, a variety in danger of extinction
Carrasqueña olives are known for their low productivity and exceptional characteristics, making this a unique variety. The low productivity of the "Carrasqueño olive trees" is causing the uprooting of these, a subject that worries José V. Rodríguez, the producer of Aceites Soto Marañón.
A trip by José V. Rodriguez with oenologist Álvaro Palacios led to a conversation in which the producer conveyed the fear of seeing this unique variety become extinct, which was being replaced by other more popular varieties such as Picual. Álvaro advised him to bet on this variety, at which point the producer seriously considered carrying out a project to put the Carrasqueña variety where it deserves to be. Bertrand Sourdais (winemaker of Bodegas Antidoto) "gave the final push", analyzing the properties of the land, at which time the great potential of the estate is verified, thus beginning the first vintage of Soto Marañón oils in 2011
A very peculiar variety, popularly known as "the bird's olive", since birds are the first to "peck" because of its sweetness
