Ultreia Saint Jacques is one of the unmistakable wines from the renowned - and also unmistakable - winemaker Raúl Pérez. Originally from El Bierzo, and from a family of viticulturists in the town of Valtuille de Abajo (León), he now produces wines in different parts of Spain and abroad, but it is here in El Bierzo where his roots and his most beloved vineyards are. Depending on the harvest, the blend may vary, but it always includes a majority of old Mencía vines over 50 years old, with some vines reaching up to 100 years old.
Ultreia Saint Jacques is a great wine with a great value for money, perhaps the wine that best represents Raúl Pérez himself, and it is a tribute to the land and the historic Camino de Santiago, when pilgrims rested, drank wine, and said Ultreia: onwards.
Ultreia Saint Jacques refers to the pilgrims who pass through the vineyard on the way to Santiago de Compostela, but it is also a nod to its very French style. It is a true anthem to life, a personal homage from Raúl Pérez to the joy of setting foot on this land, and probably the wine he most identifies with in his entire production. This Mencía, fermented with whole clusters, is blended in three parts: in new barrels on one hand, in used barrels of more than 7 wines on the other to achieve a pleasant and well-integrated woodiness, and finally in large barrels to preserve this beautiful aromatic palette. It is smooth and extremely refined, a wine that showcases the full potential of this unique grape. Produced in only 2000 bottles, this is a true low-priced author wine!
Raúl Pérez is considered one of the greatest viticulturists in Spain, and also one of the most prolific, producing over thirty of his own wines, in addition to overseeing several renowned wineries (Estefania / Tilenus, Castro Ventosa). He has a discreet personality and humbly stepped aside to let the vineyard and its terroir speak, paradoxically, when he gained the status of wine superstar. From Bierzo to Rías Baixas, passing through Ribeira Sacra and Monterrei, he signs artist wines whose reputation extends far beyond the borders of his native Spain. However, despite all the hype, very few have managed to taste the virtuoso's wines as they are often produced in only a few barrels per vintage.
