Zinc is an essential micronutrient, necessary in the formation of enzymes (phosphatases, dipeptidases, dehydrogenases and carboxypeptidases), the formation of red blood cells and proteins; thirdly, it helps in wound healing, in the development of sexual organs and in brain metabolism.
The recommended daily dose for a healthy adult is 15mg, in pregnant and lactating women, this dose increases to 20-25mg. A deficiency of zinc causes lesions in the skin, nails and hair (since it is necessary for the formation of keratin), anomalies in the reproductive organs, gastrointestinal disorders, anemia, etc.
A deficiency may be due to poorly balanced diets, intake of substances that interfere with its absorption as phytates, fiber, calcium, iron, copper, milk and tannins.
