Bladderwrack is a brown seaweed rich in mucilage, minerals, such as sodium salts, potassium and magnesium; trace elements, particularly iodine (0.1%), and also cobalt, zinc, nickel, chromium, silicon, etc. Finally, it is a good source of nitrogenous matter and vitamins A, B1, C and D.
It is attributed slimming properties due to its high iodine content, stimulating the metabolism through the thyroid; and for its mucilage content, which, in contact with the liquids of the stomach and intestine, forms a viscous and very bulky gel that increases the volume of stool, promoting peristalsis, exerting a satiating effect and hindering the absorption of sugars and fats.
