Geology and soil: the vineyards are planted in sandy and calcareous soils. In terms of climate, they benefit from the dry winds of the Mediterranean, which are very beneficial for fruit ripening.
Production: the grapes spend a short period of time in 1000-liter tanks macerating the skins with their own juice. The fermentation of the grapes takes place without any intervention and always spontaneously. After fermentation, it is pressed and the malolactic fermentation is done in the same tanks in a completely natural way.
Pairing: This red wine is perfect for many dishes, including soups, cheeses, vegetables, or rice.
Winery:
Located in Landete, province of Cuenca, at a midpoint between three provinces: Valencia, Cuenca, and Teruel, at an altitude of 1100 meters, at the highest point. The estate covers a total of 200 hectares and the winery is located in the middle of it. The philosophy of ALTOLANDON is to make quality wines and, therefore, quality grapes. They take great care of everything related to the vineyard from the moment of planting, choosing the most suitable varieties, stocks, and clones for their climate and each type of soil.
The highlands provide ideal conditions for high-quality production, giving the wines unique and special characteristics in the world. The wine comes from the grape, but the altitude at which it develops and the terroir from which it comes are essential for the final result.
At higher altitudes, there is more and better solar radiation, which increases thermal amplitude. The higher the altitude, the more tannins. Altitude provides a refreshing effect that increases acidity levels due to thermal amplitude. Accumulation of aromas and flavors.
These climatic conditions make the grapes undergo slow and prolonged ripening in the last months of the grape gestation period. Thus, the grapes are more resilient, smaller, and with a higher proportion of skins than pulp, which is essential for red wines, as tannins are found in the skins. Wines from these grapes offer a wide range of color, aroma depth, and complexity in the mouth, making them more suitable for aging in barrels, as higher acidity and tannin levels increase the chances of obtaining wines suitable for aging.
The grapes reach a high degree of perfection. Result: wines with their own personality:
"Wine is made in the grape"
Organic farming
At Altolandon, they are environmentally friendly, so all their plots are cultivated organically. In the highlands, the winds clean the air, and the vegetation thrives thanks to the absence of pesticides. In addition, soil fertility is stimulated only with natural fertilizers. The grapes have to express themselves in the wine and show the characteristics of the place where they come from, without make-up or additives.
Soils
The entire estate is separated according to varieties and soil types. A study was carried out prior to planting to indicate the most suitable varieties for each type of soil, ... Poor and unproductive soils, sandy loam, and stony soils.
Each of the different soils gives the grapes different "nuances," which give the wines particular characteristics of the place they come from. The philosophy of ALTOLANDON is to make quality wines and, therefore, quality grapes. They take great care of everything related to the vineyard from the moment of planting, choosing the most suitable varieties, stocks, and clones for their climate and each type of soil.
