El Bierzo Designation of Origin (D.O.)
The Bierzo Region is located in the northwest of the province of León, within the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León, covering an area of 2,954.28 square kilometers, representing 18% of the provincial territory. Geographically, it borders the provinces of Ourense, Lugo, and Asturias, serving as a communication hub between Galicia, León, and Asturias. It features a characteristic Mediterranean microclimate, with milder temperatures than neighboring areas, and its low altitude generally prevents late frosts, which is beneficial for an early harvest, typically occurring a month earlier than in other regions of Castilla y La Rioja.
Extreme temperatures occur in winter and summer, with an average of 12.3ºC, reaching mean minimums of 3.6º in cold months and maximums of 23.6º in warmer months.
The average annual precipitation is around 721 mm. The annual average sunlight exposure ranges from 2,100 to 2,200 hours throughout the year.
In El Bierzo, vineyards are primarily located on wet brown soils, slightly acidic and devoid of carbonates, typical of humid climates.
The acidity level ranges from 4 to 8.5, with higher values predominating in valleys.
The key quality factors lie in gently sloping terraces where vineyards are situated close to rivers, semi-terraced hillsides, or steeply sloped vineyards at altitudes between 450 and 1,000 meters.
Grape Varieties
El Bierzo is a fertile land where various grape varieties are grown, all adapted to the soil and climate characteristics. Wines produced under the Designation of Origin must be made exclusively from the following varieties: Mencía, Garnacha tintorera, Godello, Doña blanca, and Palomino.
Mencía
Main red variety in El Bierzo, representing 74.5% of the grape cultivated in the production area. Low-yielding variety, early budding, and early ripening. Small, moderately compact clusters. Medium-sized, uniform blue-black berries. The pulp is not pigmented.
Garnacha tintorera
Red variety representing 2% of the grape cultivated in the production area, also known as Alicante bouschet. Low-yielding variety, early budding, and medium-early ripening. Large, moderately compact clusters. Medium-sized, uniform blue-black berries. Strong pigmentation in the pulp with a reddish color.
