Terra Alta

LaFou de Batea is a red wine produced by LaFou in D.O. Terra Alta with the varieties garnacha tinta and samsó (carignan). The most personal wine from the winery. Micro vinifications separately from vineyards of 50-70 years, where garnacha tinta and peluda coexist, with a small part of samsó. Made in Spain Gourmet always offers the best of Spanish gastronomy.

Rating: Peñín 91; Suckling 91

Pioneer in the white grenache style, different work is carried out to extract the best virtues of each vineyard. In the youngest vineyards, an earlier harvest is carried out to enhance acidity and more primary fruit; the older vineyards are harvested in a more advanced state of ripeness.

Ramon Roqueta, a lover of grenache, develops his project Lafou Celler in the Terra Alta. A vineyard of his own, located in Mas Gabrielet, a property located north of the municipality of Batea (Tarragona). As a result, they obtain elaborations with varietal typicity and the characteristic of the terroir.

Tasting notes: Deep cherry color, presents a wide range of aromatic sensations. Notes of raw hazelnut, red fruit, and balsamic memories of undergrowth, which then evolve into notes of plum and black olive.

In the mouth, it provides a fresh entry that refers to the fruit, good acidity that balances the sweetness of the grenache, and a long finish

Production: LaFou de Batea comes from vineyards between 40 and 70 years old planted in predominantly calcareous soils, with clayey and clayey-loamy textures at over 350 meters above sea level. Yields are low and

a manual harvest is carried out. Upon entering the winery, the grapes pass through a cooling chamber where they are chilled to 5ºC. After destemming, fermentation takes place in small open stainless steel tanks, with an aerial punching system. Aging for 12 months in 300-liter Central European oak barrels and concrete eggs.

Pairing: at Made in Spain Gourmet we recommend it with mushrooms, Roasts, Semi-cured goat or sheep cheeses, Grilled red meats, Roasted red meats. Iberian sausages and acorn-fed ham.

The Terra Alta D.O., the Mediterranean inland

The production and processing area of the "Terra Alta" Designation of Origin (DOTA) is located in southern Catalonia, between the Ebro River and the border with Aragonese lands, encompassing the 12 municipalities of the Terra Alta region.

Its landscape maintains all the characteristic features of an inland terroir near the Mediterranean Sea: pre-coastal limestone mountain ranges (Puertos de Horta, Sierras de Pàndols i Cavalls), small rivers (Algars and Canaletes), conglomerate rock mountains, holm oak and white pine forests, and above all, agricultural soils tinted with typical Mediterranean crops: almond, grapevine, and olive.

Within this framework, three clearly differentiated landscape units of agricultural interest must be added: La Plana, the Plateau, and the Valleys.

Characteristics

Cultivated soils generally have medium textures. They have in common their richness in limestone and are poor in organic matter. The DOTA soil catalog classifies up to 17 profiles, among which the Panal stands out. Another feature that claims the Mediterranean inland character is the climatology. Abundant sunshine and scarce rainfall. Two particularities stand out: a unique balance between the two dominant winds, the Cierzo (NW) and the garbinada (southern marinades), and a cold winter that denotes some continental characteristics.

Vineyards

Vineyards are present in all the landscape units of La Plana, the Plateau, and the Valleys, and especially concentrated in the central third of the production area, between 350 and 550 meters above sea level.

The terrace is the most common cultivation unit and is a consequence of the interaction of cultivation with the varied terrain, arranging it at
