Valbuena 5th is the purest expression of red wine at Vega Sicilia, with a five-year aging period between wood and bottle, which gives its name to the wine: Valbuena 5th.
The vintage was drier than previous ones, which was reflected in the grape harvest at the beginning of September. The grapes were very healthy and thanks to the rains that fell during this time, there was good skin ripening. Our obsession was to find that point of freshness without falling into overripeness. During fermentation, we took care to extract gently. Of course, we adapted the aging process by aging part of the wine in large wooden vats during the first year to seek more tension in the wines. In this vintage, we gave less weight to American oak and more to French oak, especially with fresh toasting. In the second year of aging, the vats worked on that complexity of nuances and above all the elegance in texture.
Valbuena 5th is both succulent and powerful, tense and delicate. It is expressive, elegant, joyful, deep, it is a fascinating wine.
