Long, narrow, cylindrical muzzle. Voluminous head. Broad fins, with a length not exceeding 60% of the length of the mantle. Inner dorsal shell (feather) not calcified, very narrow and transparent. Tentacular club with very large suckers in the central rows. Coloration variable, usually pinkish-whitish; on the upper part of the mantle males usually have elongated purplish-red spots, resembling flames of fire, smaller than those of Loligo forbesi.
