Pomegranate is a fruit with very low caloric value due to its low carbohydrate content. The main component is water and in terms of other nutrients, it is worth mentioning its mineral contribution of potassium. This mineral is necessary for the transmission and generation of nerve impulses and for muscle activity, as it is involved in balancing water inside and outside the cell.
Other notable components include citric acid (with disinfectant action, alkalizes urine, and enhances the action of vitamin C), malic acid, flavonoids (antioxidant pigments), and tannins, the latter being substances with astringent and anti-inflammatory properties.
The pomegranate originates from Asia (Persia and Afghanistan) and Eastern European countries like Greece. Currently, its cultivation has spread throughout Europe, Asia, and America, with notable production in Afghanistan, Brazil, Israel, California, and Spain.
It has a thick skin and is scarlet or golden in color. It is globe-shaped. Its interior is divided by a white membrane, where each cavity contains numerous vesicles filled with red or pink pulp. It has a sour taste due to its citric acid content.
The most produced varieties in Spain are Grano de Elche (which ripens between October and November) and Mollar de Játiva or Mollar de Valencia.
It has a low carbohydrate content and contains vitamin C and B vitamins. Therefore, it is highly recommended in cases of anemia. Among the minerals, potassium stands out with a high content, and to a lesser extent phosphorus, manganese, calcium, iron, and magnesium.
Its characteristic sour taste is due to the presence of a large amount of citric acid. It is recommended for relieving asthma, fever, and cardiovascular diseases. It prevents fluid retention. It helps combat hypertension. Its antioxidant properties delay the aging of certain cells in the body. The tannins in pomegranate are good for cases of diarrhea. Recent studies indicate that consuming pomegranate may be beneficial in preventing certain types of cancer.
