One of the great hallmarks ofVega Sicilia is the production of concentrated, mature, refined and extremely elegant wines , which have been the flagship of the range of the best Spanish wines worldwide. Currently, at the head of the production of these wines is Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan , technical director of the winery since 2015.The Vega Sicilia winery is located in the Valladolid town of Valbuena de Duero , in an estate that forms a valley that follows the course of the river. The estate has 250 hectares of vineyards, 80% of which are planted with the native variety, Tinto Fino or Tempranillo , and the rest with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. The soils are clay-limestone, with brown and alluvial areas, and Ribera del Duero has a continental climate with Atlantic influence. Rainfall is scarce, with annual averages not exceeding 500 mm, concentrated especially in spring and autumn. Sunshine, extensive and abundant, reaches annual averages of 2,200 hours of sunshine , and the Duero River favors morning mists and fogs that form an additional source of humidity.The beginning of the XXI century came to the Alvarez family (current owners) with a new challenge: the landing of Vega Silicia in Rioja. To do this, the group joined forces with another of the mythical names in the world of wine, Benjamin Rothschild , owner of important wineries in Francia.Ambas firms jointly brought to market in 2013 the Macán wine, corresponding to the 2009 vintage, the first Vega Sicilia wine in the D.O.Ca. Rioja. In June 2017 took place the inauguration of a spectacular winery located in the municipality of Samaniego designed by the architect Enrique Johansson , which was attended among other personalities the emeritus King Juan Carlos I.
