During the Spanish occupation of Flanders by the Duke of Alba the Augustinians founded several monasteries in the occupied areas. These monks also brewed their own beer, and the owner of the Van Steenberge brewery, Joseph Van Steenberge, got the license and the recipes to brew the Augustijn beers. There are photos from the early 1960s in which some Augustinian monks visit the brewery, checking the empty bottles, the brewing process and the beer itself.
Augustijn brewery
[BOTTLE 33 CL]
Dark abbey beer, 7% alcohol, top fermented and with secondary fermentation in the bottle.
Augustijn Donker is the logical completion of the range of abbey beers
With Augustijn Donker the range of abbey beers is logically completed, it is the dark version, with a reddish-hazelnut colour and a firm layer of foam.
With fruity aromas (red fruits) and aromas of red berries
Fruity aromas (red fruit) and slightly smoky, meets the expectations to be a robust beer but at the same time soft, with hints of raisin and chocolate, ending with a light and dry bitterness
We recommend it especially to accompany pasta with truffles
