Ice Cider 1898

The Ice Cider 1898 is made by harvesting apples from the orchards of the El Gaitero group at optimum maturity and then freezing them.

Frozen apples are pressed to obtain a must very rich in sugars that ferments with selected yeasts and matures for three months on the lees. It is then filtered and bottled.

It has an alcohol content of 9% and comes in a 37.5 cl bottle.

The Winery

The new trade with the Americas forced the Asturian industry to devise a way to preserve the cider in optimum conditions during its journey across the sea. Then comes a discovery, which has its true origin in the medical field of medicinal waters and pharmaceuticals: the champagne machine. This new tool, which generates the carbonated bubble of the cider and preserves it for consumption, will allow Asturian emigrants to bring the taste of their land. It was in 1888 when the brothers Alberto and Eladio del Valle, financed by Bernardo de la Ballina and Ángel Fernández, acquired the necessary machinery to start the "champanization" of cider in the Council of Villaviciosa. One year later, on May 24, 1890, the company Valle, Ballina y Fernández starts up. This is the beginning of a long and fruitful history: that of El Gaitero cider, which begins with a resounding success both in the Peninsula and in America.

The facilities of El Gaitero in La Espuncia extend across more than 40,000 square meters, strategically located next to the Villaviciosa estuary. There, its century-old cellars, declared one of the most representative elements of the Historical Industrial Heritage of Asturias, coexist with innovative state-of-the-art technology.
