St. Bernardus Extra 4 is an "Enkel" or "Singel" style beer. These are the beers brewed by monks for their own consumption. It is based on the old recipe that St. Bernardus received from Westvleteren when they started brewing their beers in 1946. It is brewed every year for spring and summer.

The Enkel, as it can not be otherwise, has a light golden color somewhat cloudy. St. Bernardus Extra 4 has a creamy, abundant, white and long-lasting foam
Aromas of yeast, bread and coriander with light notes of orange peel
The taste is smooth and light with confirmation of aromatic sensations. Evident citrus presence with fine and slight bitterness. Its refreshing finish makes it ideal for the summer season
