The red Afuega'l Pitu cheese from Temia was proclaimed winner of a "SuperGold" medal at the World Cheese Awards 21/22 held in Oviedo. This places it among the top 88 cheeses in the world.
It is an Asturian cheese with a designation of origin and is made with pasteurized cow's milk, whose curd is introduced into molds for 24 hours to remove the whey. It is then kneaded and wrapped in gauze and suspended in the air, giving it a pumpkin-like shape, initiating the maturation process.
The red color of the Afuega'l Pitu cheese crust is given by the paprika which gives it a slight spicy flavor.
It is an intense cheese, with acidic aromas due to its lactic coagulation.
Natural rind covered in mold.
It comes from the Temia Cheese Factory founded in the small village that gives it its name. It is a family business that participates in fairs and competitions, making this cheese a presence on the shelves of large supermarkets and in renowned restaurants, crossing borders, and even being available for purchase on Fifth Avenue in NY.
