Located in a charming bay in the south-east of Islay, Scotland's southernmost island, is the Lagavulin distillery, home to complex whiskeys distilled in unique pear-shaped copper stills. Various factors forge its distinctive robust profile, with the influence of peat being especially prominent on the palate of this single malt Scotch whisky. This whiskey is characterized by its smoky notes, where sweet spices stand out. Its fresh nuances reveal an aromatic delicacy, with flashes of milk chocolate and smoky lemon, as well as subtle oceanic notes. When you try it, it spreads smoothly, leaving an oily and gratifying sensation. Its wide taste spectrum displays a rich structure, with charred touches and flavors of mint and dark chocolate.
This complex whiskey culminates in a clean, persistent and deeply smoky finish, drying the palate with a smoky note. During a visit to Islay around 1880, the renowned journalist and whiskey historian, Alfred Barnard, tasted an eight-year-old Lagavulin, which he described as 'exceptionally good and highly renowned'. Lagavulin 8 is a tribute to that memorable comment. It has an alcoholic content of 48%.
