Legumes from the Vega de Saldaña (Palencia)
History
Legumes La Vieja Olma was born in 2016 in Villanueva de los Nabos, in the Vega de Saldaña region in the province of Palencia, watered by the Carrión river. An area highly valued for its legumes, especially for the Kidney White Bean, known as the "Pearl of the Vega". Arguiñano already said: "The legumes from Saldaña, the best in Spain" "And those from Carrión the best in the region".
Despite our youth, we already have a quality seal that recognizes our products, being members of the Palencia Food club. Traditionally this area has produced and exported a lot of legumes during the past century, but extensive agriculture and the loss of labor in the villages have made it practically residual. Herein lies our main objective and philosophy: to bet only on the indigenous, local product. All our legumes come from small farmers in the area .
Our Project
We are farmers, we produce and market our legumes directly , as well as those of other small farmers in the area who are committed to this product that has been stopped sowing in favor of other more profitable ones and with less need for hands working. With our project we also collaborate in promoting sustainable agriculture , giving the farmer an alternative to other products and doing a crop rotation that does not add chemical fertilizers to our legumes.
We commercialize the autochthonous species, Pinta Bean or Chickpea and, above all, the Kidney White Bean, with the nickname of "La Perla de la Vega", it is undoubtedly the most well-known and valued bean in the region b >. In our desire to offer new and different products from the usual ones, knowing that our location allows it, this campaign we have started with the commercialization of Cinnamon Beans and Arrocina Beans. We have already done tests with new species, common from other areas, which we will be incorporating in future campaigns.
Team
