Sage is a shrubby aromatic plant of the Lamiaceae family. Its Roman name refers to the herb's ability to cure a multitude of illnesses. The active part of this plant is the leaves, which contain essential oil, consisting mainly of alpha- and beta-thujone, camphor and cineol, tannins, rosmarinic acid, flavonoids, diterpenes and triterpenes.

Traditionally, sage has been used for its antimicrobial and antifungal action (mainly due to its essential oil), as well as some antiviral activity (due to diterpenes). It is also used as an anti-inflammatory (thanks to rosmarinic acid), hormone regulator (thanks to phytoestrogenic substances that alleviate symptoms of climacteric and dysmenorrhoea), astringent, secretion stimulant and antiperspirant (to combat hyperhidrosis).
