Golden sun or perpetua is a perennial phanerogamous plant of the asteraceae family. Its aroma is reminiscent of curry. It is a native European plant found in many countries in the Mediterranean basin. Its flowering tops contain phenolic compounds: it also contains essential oil, steroids and triterpenes.

Traditionally, goldenseal has been used as a diuretic, choleretic, spasmolytic and antihypertensive. It also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant action. It is commonly used to treat allergies, colds, coughs, skin, liver and gall bladder conditions, inflammation, infections and insomnia. It is an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent. Its flavonoids and terpenes were effective against bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus), its acetophenones, floroglucinols and terpenoids showed antifungal action against Candida albicans and its flavonoids and floroglucinols inhibited HSV (herpes simplex virus) and HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), respectively. Its acetophenones, flavonoids and floroglucinols showed inhibitory action on different pathways of arachidonic acid metabolism and other pro-inflammatory mediators. With regard to "in vivo" activity, dermoprotective activities, photoprotective and anti-inflammatory properties stand out.
