More information

One of the great hallmarks of Vega Sicilia is the production of concentrated, mature, refined and extremely elegant wines, which have become the flagship of the best Spanish wines in the world. Currently, at the head of the production of these wines is Gonzalo Iturriaga de Juan, technical director of the winery since 2015.

The Vega Sicilia winery is located in the Valladolid town of Valbuena de Duero, in an estate that forms a valley that follows the course of the river. This sets the northern boundary to the 1,000 hectares of the property; the southern boundary is set by the forest that climbs the hillside that reaches the plain

The estate has a plantation of 250 hectares of vineyards, 80% of which are planted with the native variety, Tinto fino or Tempranillo, and the rest with Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. The soils are clay-limestone, with brown and alluvial areas

The Ribera del Duero has a continental climate with Atlantic influence. Rainfall is scarce, with annual averages that do not exceed 500 mm, especially concentrated in spring and autumn. The sunshine, extensive and abundant, reaches annual averages of 2,200 hours of sunshine, and the Douro River favours morning mists and fogs that form an additional source of humidity

The beginning of the 21st century came to the Álvarez family (current owners) with a new challenge: the landing of Vega Silicia in Rioja. To do so, the group joined forces with another of the legendary names in the world of wine, Benjamin Rothschild, owner of important wineries in France.

Both firms jointly released the Macán wine in 2013, corresponding to the 2009 vintage, the first Vega Sicilia wine in the D.O.Ca. Rioja. In June 2017 took place the inauguration of a spectacular winery located in the municipality of Samaniego designed by the architect Enrique Johansson, which was attended among other personalities the King emeritus Juan Carlos I.
