BOLOGNESE LASAGNA

What is bolognese lasagna?

It is a type of lasagna (lasagna in Italian), which consists of layers of pasta intercalated with bolognese sauce, bechamel, and cheese.
Bolognese sauce (ragù alla bolognese) is a preparation made with minced meat (usually beef and pork), onion, carrot, celery, tomato, red wine, and milk or cream. It is cooked slowly to develop a deep flavor.

Typical ingredients

  • Pasta sheets (can be precooked or not)
  • Bolognese sauce
  • Bechamel sauce
  • Grated cheese (like parmesan or mozzarella)
  • Butter (optional for gratin)

How is it consumed?

Hot: it is baked until the cheese is gratinated and bubbly. It is an ideal main dish for lunches or dinners.
Reheated: many people say it is even tastier the next day, after the flavors have rested.
Side dishes: it is usually served with a green salad, garlic bread, or a glass of red wine.

Varieties of lasagna (besides bolognese)

Although bolognese lasagna is the most classic, there are many versions:

  • Vegetable lasagna: with vegetables like spinach, zucchini, eggplant, etc.
  • Chicken lasagna: it replaces the beef with shredded chicken.
  • Seafood lasagna: with shrimp, salmon, or a mix of seafood.
  • White lasagna: without tomato, only with bechamel and other ingredients.
  • Gluten-free lasagna: with special pasta for celiacs.
  • Vegan lasagna: without animal products, using plant-based alternatives for meat, bechamel, and cheese.
