TAJÍN

What is Tajín?

Tajín is a registered trademark originating from Mexico, but it is also colloquially used to refer to its flagship product: the "Clásico Tajín". It was created in the 1980s by Horacio Fernández in Jalisco, inspired by a family recipe of chili with lime and salt.

Properties of Tajín

Although it is primarily a seasoning, it has some interesting properties:

  • Low in calories and fat-free
  • Contains no added sugars
  • Rich in vitamin C (from dehydrated lime)
  • Stimulates appetite and digestion
  • May contain capsaicin (from chili), a natural antioxidant

Varieties of Tajín

Clásico Tajín: the original blend of chili, salt, and lime.
Low Sodium Tajín: a version with less salt.
Extra Lime Tajín: with a more acidic touch.
Habanero Tajín: spicier, with habanero chili.
Fruity Chamoy Tajín: combination of sweet, sour, and spicy.
Liquid Tajín: a liquid version to use on fruits or beverages.

Main producing countries

Although Tajín as a brand is produced in Mexico, the product is widely exported. Other countries that produce similar mixes of chili powder with lime and salt (although not under the name Tajín) include:

United States (production for the local Latino market)
Guatemala and El Salvador (similar homemade or commercial blends)

However, the authentic Tajín is 100% Mexican.

How can it be consumed?

Tajín is incredibly versatile: Mango, pineapple, watermelon, cucumber, jicama. Avocado with a little Tajín and lime
Snacks: Potato chips, popcorn, peanuts, tortilla chips

Beverages: Micheladas, margaritas, clamatos

Used for rimming glasses
Desserts: Mangonadas, ice creams, sorbets
